Overview
The Fishing Pier at Angostura Recreation Area provides shore anglers with access to one of western South Dakota’s major reservoirs. Angostura Reservoir has an established warm-water fishery and is particularly known for walleye, smallmouth bass, and crappie, while also supporting northern pike, largemouth bass, yellow perch, and bluegill.
The recreation area is especially well equipped for anglers. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks lists accessible fishing piers, shore fishing access, boat ramps, and fish-cleaning stations among its amenities. The reservoir also provides extensive shoreline and boating access for anglers who want to explore beyond the pier.
Fishing Tips
Walleye anglers can try jigs, crankbaits, and baitfish-oriented presentations, particularly during lower-light periods. Smallmouth bass can be targeted around rocky structure with tubes, soft plastics, and jigs, while crappie anglers can use small jigs around structure and changes in depth.
Northern pike may respond to spoons and larger moving lures. For bluegill and perch, scale down to light tackle, small jigs, or permitted bait. Because Angostura is a large reservoir, wind direction and seasonal fish movement can make a major difference in shore-fishing success.
Bottom Line
One of the stronger fishing-pier destinations in western South Dakota, with an accessible pier, fish-cleaning facilities, boat access, and a diverse fishery led by walleye, smallmouth bass, and crappie.
