Overview

Brantley Lake is a large reservoir on the Pecos River north of Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico. The lake provides warm-water fishing in a desert setting and offers opportunities for both shore anglers and boat fishermen.

Depending on water levels, anglers can target points, rocky banks, coves, deeper channels, and other reservoir structure. Fishing conditions can change significantly as lake levels and water temperatures fluctuate throughout the year.

Fishing Tips

Bass anglers can try soft plastics, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs around rocky structure and changes in depth. Crappie may concentrate around submerged structure, where small jigs and minnows can be effective.

For catfish, use bottom rigs in deeper water or along channels, especially during warmer periods. Because reservoir levels can fluctuate, look for newly flooded cover or sharp transitions into deeper water.

Bottom Line

A southeastern New Mexico reservoir offering shore and boat fishing for bass, catfish, crappie, and other warm-water species near Carlsbad.
